Before the bridge, Charlie Simmons Sr. was how Hilton Head reached the mainland — a Gullah boatman running three trips a week to Savannah with crops, livestock and midwives aboard. The Reilley and Simmons families restored his 1955 camp and reopened it in 2016. The road still carries his name.
